Shadow of the Fox
Julie Kagawa

One thousand years ago, the great Kami Dragon was summoned to grant a single terrible wish—and the land of Iwagoto was plunged into an age of darkness and chaos.

Now, for whoever holds the Scroll of a Thousand Prayers, a new wish will be granted. A new age is about to dawn.

Raised by monks in the isolated Silent Winds temple, Yumeko has trained all her life to hide her yokai nature. Half kitsune, half human, her skill with illusion is matched only by her penchant for mischief. Until the day her home is burned to the ground, her adoptive family is brutally slain and she is forced to flee for her life with the temple’s greatest treasure—one part of the ancient scroll.

There are many who would claim the dragon’s wish for their own. Kage Tatsumi, a mysterious samurai of the Shadow Clan, is one such hunter, under orders to retrieve the scroll…at any cost. Fate brings Kage and Yumeko together. With a promise to lead him to the scroll, an uneasy alliance is formed, offering Yumeko her best hope for survival. But he seeks what she has hidden away, and her deception could ultimately tear them both apart.

With an army of demons at her heels and the unlikeliest of allies at her side, Yumeko’s secrets are more than a matter of life or death. They are the key to the fate of the world itself.

I’m really looking forward to reading this! I’m hoping that Shadow of the Fox will be THE book that gets me into Julie Kagawa’s writing style. I’ve tried about 30 – 50 pages of both The Immortal Rules and Talon and neither was success. But Shadow of the Fox sounds like it will do the trick!

Also, I can’t help but picture Kira from Teen Wolf 🐺 as Yumeko.

Anyone else looking forward to reading Shadow of the Fox 🦊?!

Until next time bibliophiles,

Hey bibliophiles,

This week’s Top Ten Tuesday theme is TOP TEN AUTHORS I’D LOVE TO MEET

Sarah Dessen | 1

Really looking forward to the day I get to check this off my bucket list! I still remember when I picked up How to Deal (Movie-tie in) from Chapters, I remember reading both stories (Someone Like You & That Summer) and loving the characters Sarah Dessen created. After that I bought every book that was published by her.

Meg Cabot | 2

Same as above, I still believe the day will come that I’ll be able to check this off my bucket list! Now, listen I loved The Princess Diaries series, but The Mediator series was THE BEST SERIES EVER! Oh, and I also loved the 1-800-Where-R-You series. I would bring my stack of mass market paperbacks of The Mediator series for her to sign but also to show her all the creases in the spines for all the times I’ve reread that series <3.

Roshani Chokshi| 3

Okay, so technically I’ve already met Roshani Chokshi but I was so nervous and screaming on the inside especially when she recognized me from Twitter and asked if she could hug me. Seriously, I might be typing this from the afterlife because I DIED!!! She was just absolutely awesome and I badly want to meet her again!

Jennifer Niven| 4

If I had the chance to meet Jennifer Niven I would give her a huge hug and thank her. I read All the Bright Places less than a month of it being released and at the time I was still coming to terms with a friend that committed suicide. Reading All the Bright Places really helped me come to terms with what had happened and all the guilt I felt. So, thank you Jennifer Niven for helping me cope <3.

Nicola Yoon | 5

Everything, Everything was absolutely EVERYTHING to me <3. Prior to Everything, Everything releasing I can’t remember a time when I read a book that had representation for me. I missed out on actually meeting her in person when she was in Toronto for the screening of Everything, Everything. My fingers are crossed that I’ll get another opportunity  when she releases her next book.

Tiffany D. Jackson | 6

Tiffany D. Jackson. This women, I can’t. I’m still not over Monday’s Not Coming. It was my first read by her and when I’m emotionally ready I’ll be reading her pervious book Allegedly.

Tomi Adeyemi | 7

I haven’t read Children of Blood and Bone yet (don’t @ me, I’ll get to it this year okay!?!) but I still badly want to meet Tomi Adeyemi. I mean, do you follow her on social media?! Because she’s absolutely hilarious and intelligent and I feel like meeting her would be far from a dull moment.

Lori Foster | 8

Lori Foster. My queen of romance <3. I used to think Harlequin romance was for older women, I still remember randomly coming across Run the Risk on iBooks, reading it, and absolutely loving it, and being completely shocked when I found out it was a Harlequin LOL. And ever since I’ve been on a mission to catch up on her backlist titles and new ones.

Francesca Zappia | 9

Back in 2016 I decided to finally pick up my copy of Made You Up and I devoured it!! I stayed up until 4:00AM in the morning to finish it. Yep, so if you want one picking up Francesca Zippa’s books may I recommend you don’t start them right before bed unless you plan on not getting any sleep.

Brigid Kemmerer | 10

Brigid Kemmerer is a new favourite author. She tore me to pieces with her writing in Letters to the Lost and More Than We Can Tell and I’ll honestly read anything she writes.

Kerri Maniscalco | 11

I decided to add an 11th to the list since I included Roshani, so number 11 is Kerri Maniscalco! I LOVE the Stalking Jack the Ripper series and honestly if I could just have a 10min chat with her so she can tell anything and everything about Audrey & Thomas I would be OVER THE MOON!!

Are any of these authors on your list?

Please leave comments & links to your Top Ten below :)!

Anticipated Releases | October

Hey bibliophiles,

Hello October! Here’s 5 books that I’m looking forward to this month!

Sawkill Girls by Claire Legrande | October 2

Beware of the woods and the dark, dank deep.
He’ll follow you home, and he won’t let you sleep.

Who are the Sawkill Girls?

Marion: the new girl. Awkward and plain, steady and dependable. Weighed down by tragedy and hungry for love she’s sure she’ll never find.

Zoey: the pariah. Luckless and lonely, hurting but hiding it. Aching with grief and dreaming of vanished girls. Maybe she’s broken—or maybe everyone else is.

Val: the queen bee. Gorgeous and privileged, ruthless and regal. Words like silk and eyes like knives, a heart made of secrets and a mouth full of lies.

Their stories come together on the island of Sawkill Rock, where gleaming horses graze in rolling pastures and cold waves crash against black cliffs. Where kids whisper the legend of an insidious monster at parties and around campfires.

Where girls have been disappearing for decades, stolen away by a ravenous evil no one has dared to fight… until now.

Swing by Kwame Alexander & Mary Rand Hess | October 2

Things usually do not go as planned for seventeen-year-old Noah. He and his best friend Walt (aka Swing) have been cut from the high school baseball team for the third year in a row, and it looks like Noah’s love interest since third grade, Sam, will never take it past the “best friend” zone. Noah would love to retire his bat and accept the status quo, but Walt has big plans for them both, which include making the best baseball comeback ever, getting the girl, and finally finding cool.

To go from lovelorn to ladies’ men, Walt introduces Noah to a relationship guru—his Dairy Queen-employed cousin, Floyd—and the always informative Woohoo Woman Podcast. Noah is reluctant, but decides fate may be intervening when he discovers more than just his mom’s birthday gift at the thrift shop. Inside the vintage Keepall is a gold mine of love letters from the 1960s. Walt is sure these letters and the podcasts are just what Noah needs to communicate his true feelings to Sam. To Noah, the letters are more: an initiation to the curious rhythms of love and jazz, as well as a way for him and Walt to embrace their own kind of cool. While Walt is hitting balls out of the park and catching the eye of the baseball coach, Noah composes anonymous love letters to Sam in an attempt to write his way into her heart. But as things are looking up for Noah and Walt, a chain of events alters everything Noah knows to be true about love, friendship, sacrifice, and fate.

Fight or Flight by Samantha Young | October 9

The universe is conspiring against Ava Breevort. As if flying back to Phoenix to bury a childhood friend wasn’t hell enough, a cloud of volcanic ash traveling from overseas delayed her flight back home to Boston. Her last ditch attempt to salvage the trip was thwarted by an arrogant Scotsman, Caleb Scott, who steals a first class seat out from under her. Then over the course of their journey home, their antagonism somehow lands them in bed for the steamiest layover Ava’s ever had. And that’s all it was–until Caleb shows up on her doorstep.

When pure chance pulls Ava back into Caleb’s orbit, he proposes they enjoy their physical connection while he’s stranded in Boston. Ava agrees, knowing her heart’s in no danger since a) she barely likes Caleb and b) his existence in her life is temporary. Not long thereafter Ava realizes she’s made a terrible error because as it turns out Caleb Scott isn’t quite so unlikeable after all. When his stay in Boston becomes permanent, Ava must decide whether to fight her feelings for him or give into them. But even if she does decide to risk her heart on Caleb, there is no guarantee her stubborn Scot will want to risk his heart on her….

Odd One Out by Nic Stone | October 9

Courtney “Coop” Cooper
Dumped. Again. And normally I wouldn’t mind. But right now, my best friend and source of solace, Jupiter Sanchez, is ignoring me to text some girl.

Rae Evelyn Chin
I assumed “new girl” would be synonymous with “pariah,” but Jupiter and Courtney make me feel like I’m right where I belong. I also want to kiss him. And her. Which is . . . perplexing.

Jupiter Charity-Sanchez
The only thing worse than losing the girl you love to a boy is losing her to your boy. That means losing him, too. I have to make a move. . . .

One story.
Three sides.
No easy answers.

An Assassin’s Guide to Love and Treason by Virginia Boecker | October 23

When Lady Katherine’s father is killed for being an illegally practicing Catholic, she discovers treason wasn’t the only secret he’s been hiding: he was also involved in a murder plot against the reigning Queen Elizabeth I. With nothing left to lose, Katherine disguises herself as a boy and travels to London to fulfill her father’s mission, and to take it one step further–kill the queen herself.

Katherine’s opportunity comes in the form of William Shakespeare’s newest play, which is to be performed in front of Her Majesty. But what she doesn’t know is that the play is not just a play–it’s a plot to root out insurrectionists and destroy the rebellion once and for all.

The mastermind behind this ruse is Toby Ellis, a young spy for the queen with secrets of his own. When Toby and Katherine are cast opposite each other as the play’s leads, they find themselves inexplicably drawn to one another. But the closer they grow, the more precarious their positions become. And soon they learn that star-crossed love, mistaken identity, and betrayal are far more dangerous off the stage than on.

Review: Baby Daddy

Baby Daddy
Kendall Ryan

Series: Standalone
Genre: Contemporary Romance, Romance
Publication Date: February 27 2018
Format: Kindle edition
Pages: 319

From New York Times bestselling author, Kendall Ryan, comes a feel-good and sexy new standalone romance.

We met in a trapped elevator.

Emmett was on his way to work, sophisticated and handsome in his tailored suit and tie.

I was on my way to the sperm bank. Awkward, right?

At thirty-five, my life hadn’t taken the path I thought it would and I was tired of waiting—I wanted a baby. And I was ready to take matters into my own hands to make it happen.

After our ill-fated elevator encounter, Emmett insisted on taking me to dinner—he also insisted on something else—that I ditch my plan involving a turkey baster and let him do the job. He would be my baby daddy. He was a wealthy and powerful CEO with little interest in diapers or playdates. And since he didn’t want kids, I’d be on my own once his bun was in my oven, free to go my own way.

But once his baby was inside me, it was like a switch had been flipped, and I got a whole lot more than I ever bargained for.

This full-length standalone contains a hot, swoonworthy hero, lots of playful banter and some hot baby-making! Enjoy.

Opening Line

This is it.
This skyscraper doesn’t look like anything special. No different from any of this city’s dozens of office buildings covered in mirrored windows or gray concrete. But as soon as I cross the threshold, I’ll be taking the first step toward my dream.

First Impression

I love Kendall Ryan’s books, so when I first came across Baby Daddy I was definitely intrigued. I was originally just going to wait until my library had this available on Overdrive but then I saw it was on sale and well, I couldn’t pass up the sale price. WOOT.

Baby Daddy was fast paced and just like almost all the other Kendall Ryan books I wasn’t able to put it down and ended up finishing it in one sitting.

I think this is my least favourite out of all the ones I’ve read so far. This one just didn’t grab me like all her other ones. Mind you, I can completely see why everyone else loved this one but it just wasn’t for me.

It also doesn’t help that something that is slowly developing into one of my biggest pet peeves happened near the end lol. I really really hate when there’s conflict and almost no time passes before they resolve it. Mind you, there was a couple of different issues/things that Jenna & Emmett had to work through but 87% into the book Jenna is shocked when she learns something new about Emmett. This happens at 9AM, and by 5PM Emmett finishes work and rushes over to her place where there is a quick conversation and tada everything is fine and they all lived happily ever after. Literally all it took was an “i’m sorry”, “I didn’t know”, “I love you”, “I want to be with you”.

Favourite Quotes:

I stopped looking for Mr. Right altogether at some point last year. Some well-meaning friends told me that love would find me once I stopped looking. They lied. Fuckers.

I lie there in the dark, holding a woman I didn’t know I wanted, that I can never have, listening to the soft rhythm of her breath as I try to quiet the doubts starting to swirl through my head.

Everyone knows that if you play with fire you’ll end up getting burned…

What happens when you attend a first responder’s bachelor auction with your best friends? Well, if your name is Madison Kelly like me, your friends end up bidding on a date for you with your high school crush.

That’s right. Even back when I was ‘Fatty Maddie’ to all my classmates, I had eyes for the quarterback of our football team. Not like I was the only one.

Mauro Bianco may fight fires for a living, but he still sets my heart ablaze. One look at the rugged, muscular man he’s turned into and I want to slide down his pole.

One date. That’s all I’m committed to. A few hours and I can tuck him back into that tattered old shoebox in my closet.

As always, the universe has other plans. I never would’ve predicted that in a matter of days he’d turn from my dream guy into my enemy.

My brothers widen their stances, share a look of amusement and cock their eyebrows at me.

“Hate to break it to you, but Maddie didn’t bid on you. Lauren did.” Luca laughs while Cristian chuckles.

“I’m going out with a Madison and she didn’t go to our high school. Which reminds me.” I pull out my phone.

“Maddie is Madison, you idiot,” Luca says. “Her and Lauren were my year.”

“I went to high school with Madison?” I try to let her face come back to me, and though I can picture her bright blue eyes and long chestnut hair, nothing about her is familiar from high school.

“Yes, but she definitely wasn’t hanging out at the bonfires and football pep rallies.” Luca grabs his helmet off his bike. The only responsible thing I’ve seen him do in the last few years.

“Well, shit and she doesn’t even want to go out with me? Her friend bid on me?”

Luca straddles his bike with a grin. I look over to Cristian, but he’s putting his shirt back on and starts fiddling with his earbuds. They obviously think this conversation is over.

“Yeah, but we’re all in the same boat.” Cristian’s thumb moves over his phone screen. “Maddie’s awesome and I think you’ll have a good time with her.”

“She seemed pretty quiet and way too accommodating,” I say.

Luca kicks his stand up, letting the bike rock a little under him.

Cristian’s hands freeze on the screen of his phone. “And that’s bad?” he asks.

“I want a woman who knows what she wants. Has her own damn opinions. Doesn’t just agree with everything I say.”

Cristian peeks over his shoulder, a look of amusement that matches Luca’s. “You want a girl to come up and grab your nuts?”

“I want a girl who knows what her favorite food is, has an opinion about where she wants to go for dinner, likes whatever sports team she likes and doesn’t default to my favorites.” I stuff my hands into my pockets, digging out my keys for my truck.

“Well then, Maddie might not be the one. Like I said, she’s nice.” Cristian slaps me on the shoulder. “Treat her good though, okay?” He inserts one earbud.

“What do you think I’m going to do, leave her in Garfield Park?”

He puts his other earbud in. “That’s not even funny man. I have a friend in that district and the shit that goes down there…” He shakes his head.

Cristian loses the entire point of my statement—the fact I’m not a jackass. I’m not Luca.

“It’s one date,” I say. “And who knows, maybe she’s nice but still has a wild streak.”

Christian again glances over to Luca who’s smiling like he’s fucking Mickey Mouse.

“Well, good luck on your date,” he says.

Cristian jogs away and Luca’s bike starts up.

I head to my truck.

The conversation is over, but I’m curious now.

Where’s my damn yearbook?

TBR | September

Hey bibliophiles,

I’m finally back to reading as much as I used to!

If you following me on Instagram you’ve probably seen me complain about how I’ve hardly read anything. I’m usually a fast reader and each year I always read over 100 books, and usually by this time I’m either a couple books shy of 100 or already past. However, this has been a rough reading year for me, I had a lot of reading slumps, I went back to school, and instead of reading during my commute I would be trying to catch up on sleep LOL.

In July I read 21 books and in August I read 25 books. So while my TBR will look very ambitious I’m confident in myself that I can make a good dent in this pile.
